Canal St was built as an express station on the Eighth Avenue Line.
The station has a closed passage that begins at the north end of the very long mezzanine, with exits to Grand Street and Sixth Avenue. This passage was closed sometime in 1991 because of high crime rates, and has since been converted to employee rooms. There is also a closed exit at the south end of the station, which leads to the southeastern corner of Walker Street and West Broadway (as opposed to Sixth Avenue).
