Kew Gardens/Union Turnpike
Lines:
IND Queens Blvd Line
List of closed areas:
Kew Gardens/Union Turnpike was built as an express station.
Because of Jackie Robinson Expressway and the lower level of the Union Turnpike, the station's mezzanine is split into two; thus the station was built with two set of exits. Very interestingly, along with the exits to Queens Boulevard, the station's two mezzanines were built with exits to both sides of Union Turnpike, which runs underneath Queens Boulevard - these particular exits were intended to serve as car dropoff and pickup areas, but this was stopped because of congestion caused by stopped cars at these exits. As a result, the exits were closed.
These car dropoff/pickup areas also had passages leading to Queens Boulevard and the upper level of Union Turnpike. The area to the east side of the lower level of Union Turnpike leads to the southeastern corner of Queens Boulevard and the upper level of Union Turnpike, and the area to the west side of of the lower level led to the northwestern corner of Queens Boulevard and the upper level of Union Turnpike. The exits were closed along with the car dropoff/pickup areas, but the passage to the southeastern corner was reopened as a part of a project to bring ADA accessibility to the station. However, the passage to the northwestern corner was never reopened, and has since been sealed.
