Atlantic Ave/Barclays Center was built first as an important terminal station for IRT subway trains, with connections to the nearby Atlantic Terminal. Eventually, it was reconfigured into an express station, and eventually became an important transfer station to the BMT 4th Avenue Line in 1915 and the BMT Brighton Line in 1920.
The entire complex has seem some exits closed. The BMT 4th Avenue platforms, which were originally called Atlantic Ave/Pacific St, saw entrances at both southern corners of Atlantic Avenue and 4th Avenue closed in late 1982 or 1983, and the areas around the entrances were repurposed into employee facilities. The IRT station originally had an entrance at a headhouse on the triangular island formed by Atlantic Avenue, Flatbush Avenue, and 4th Avenue; it was repurposed into a skylight. The IRT station also has a closed entrance at the east ends the platforms. Prior to the opening of Barclays Center, there was a closed fare control area, a closed underpass, and three closed entrances. Two stairs led to both the southwestern corner of Atlantic Avenue and Flatbush Avenue, and one led to the southeastern corner of the same intersection. The whole area was reconstructed to include an entrance near the sports arena, but this involved demolishing the entrance to the southeastern corner and one of the entrances to the southwestern corner; the other entrance to the southwestern corner still exists as an emergency exit.
