Sutter Ave was built as a regular station.
The station was originally built with two entrance points, with the northern one being quite grandiose. However, likely due to low ridership and security concerns, the northern set was entirely closed and mostly demolished, save part of the mezzanine. The mezzanine led to a pedestrian overpass, which led to both eastern corners of Belmont Avenue and Van Sinderen Avenue, or across a railroad line to both western corners of Belmont Avenue and Junius Street; it has since been repurposed into equipment rooms and an emergency exit from only the southbound platform.
