50th St Passage
Connection Points:
50th St (IND 8th Ave)
50th St (IRT)
Intermediate Exit Points:
Paramount Plaza building
The 50th Street Passage is a passage under the north side of 50th Street that runs between Broadway and Eighth Avenue. It runs from a sunken plaza directly outside the downtown platform of the 50th Street 1 NYC Subway station and the uptown platform of the 50th Street C/E NYC Subway station.
The passage was likely opened along with or after the Paramount Plaza building, which opened in 1970, to provide shelter from rain and snow for people commuting to the building from the aforementioned stations; there was an easement passage in the middle of the passage into the building. However, the passage was closed and reopened several times due to increasing crime. The latest reopening occurred in December 2010, but was closed again a few years later for unknown reasons.
