The 33rd Street Passage, also known as the "Gimbels Passage" because of the presence of a former nearby store named Gimbels, is a passage under the south side of 33rd Street that runs between Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue. It runs from the middle of a passage connecting the 34th Street/Herald Square NYC Subway station and the 33rd Street PATH station to a fare control area to the northbound local 1 train platform at the 34th Street/Penn Station NYC Subway station.
The passage was opened in 1919, but ultimately closed in 1986 due to increasing crime. In very recent times, there have been proposals to reopen the passage, but political and ownership difficulties have stopped such proposals from occurring.
