5th Ave was built as a station in Manhattan for the Flushing Line. 42nd St/Bryant Park was built an express station for the Sixth Avenue Line.
The station has been generally untouched, although one exit from the Flushing Line station to the north side of 42nd Street was closed due to crime. As a result, all exits lead to the south side of 42nd St.
