Broadway Junction was built originally as an important station for the BMT Jamaica Line, which was the first line to be opened out of the entire complex, as far back as 1885! It eventually became an important transfer station between subway trains when the Canarsie Line platforms opened, and an even more important transfer station when the IND station opened.
The Jamaica Line's station was originally known as Eastern Parkway. This was in part due to a now-closed mezzanine that led to both eastern corners of Eastern Parkway and Broadway. The entrance was once very spacious and grandiose, but has been repurposed into employee facilities, and there is no longer a stair from the Queens-bound Jamaica Line platform to the mezzanine, or one from the southeastern corner of the aforementioned intersection to the mezzanine.
