Times Square/42nd St was originally built as a local station on the first subway line in New York City. However, as Times Square became a busier area, it became an important express station on subsequent lines that were built around the complex. It also became a transfer station to the nearby 42nd St/Port Authority Bus Terminal station.
The station has been reconfigured countless times, with the 42nd Street Shuttle station having been most heavily reconfigured, as it was originally a four-track local station that was converted to a three-track terminal station and eventually a two-track terminal station in 2020 and 2021. Prior to the 2020s reconfiguration, the three tracks had platforms as following: the former northbound local track (4) platformed at the original uptown local platform, the former northbound express track (3) platformed on a platform built over the former southbound express track (2), and the former southbound local track (1) platformed at the original downtown local platform. In order to make the shuttle ADA accessible and to simplify operations, track 3 was closed and the platform over track 2 was expanded to cover over track 3 as well. As a result, track 4 now platforms on the bigger island platform, which led to the closure of the former uptown local platform.
In addition to the closed platform, there is one closed exit to the southeastern corner of 42nd St and 8th Ave. The exit was closed back in the 1980s, and has since been converted to a storage area for hazardous materials (Hazmat).
